The following materials are provided as essential background for discussion of the proposed changes to the Prince William County sign ordinance.

CONTENTS:

  1. SIGNS: Showcasing Your Business on the Street (Adobe PDF)

White Paper taken from Small Business Administration website:  “SIGNS: Showcasing Your Business on the Street, The Importance of Signage for your Business” by R. James Claus, PhD and Susan L. Claus.  This analysis is an essential starting point for understanding the function and importance of signs

  2. Why Do I Need a Sign For My Business (Adobe PDF)

This paper is a quick summary of sign facts and considerations to be used when selecting signage

  3. International Council of Shopping Centers:
    Loudoun County Sign Ordinance Update
    (Adobe PDF)

Presentation to Loudoun County Planning Commission prepared by Sherman Patrick, Compton and Duling, and Jimmy Jones of Art Display in response to Loudoun County Planning request for input from ICSC representatives to address most important issues in business identification, branding and new trends in design. Photos provide examples of the hierarchy of signs needed to address the various sign functions, sign branding that provides art as well as define the identity and technological advances in signage.

  4. Existing Prince William County Sign Regulations (Adobe PDF)

Excerpts from the present zoning ordinance including sections 100 and 250 of the zoning ordinance.

  5. Existing Prince William County Community Design Guidelines (Adobe PDF)

Excerpt from the present Comprehensive Plan.  Note: the design guidelines encourage building designs located close to the street with parking internal to the property. The portions of the building designs encouraged in the Comprehensive Plan that are or will be visible to the general public are frequently not the front door to the business thus requiring a new set of challenges to advertise to the passing public and another to pedestrians accessing from internal court yards and street systems.

  6. Guideline Code for Regulation of On-Premise Signs(Adobe PDF)

Guideline Code for Regulation of On-Premise Signs by Andrew D. Bertucci, United States Sign Council.  This is provided as a model code which includes examples of approaches used in other localities to address advertising and identification needs.
