Dennis Cate has been licensed to practice since 1986, when he was admitted to the bar in Massachusetts. Since then, he has been admitted to practice law in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia, where he has focused his practice on zoning, land use and real estate matters.

He received his law degree from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1986. He also received a Master's Degree in Regional Planning from UNC-CH’s Department of City and Regional Planning, with concentrations in Real Estate Development and Finance and Economic Development. While working towards his Master's Degree, he researched and wrote a paper on problem subdivisions in Coastal North Carolina, funded by the Sea Grant Program.

He has worked in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, where he provided justifications for a town's first planned unit development, and has prepared condominium applications. He has worked in land use and zoning (e.g., rezoning and special use permits) in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Dennis Cate joined the firm in June 1999, becoming a non-equity member of the firm in January, 2006. He has worked extensively on numerous residential rezonings, including multi-family, townhouse and single-family detached residential communities, as well as mixed use and non-residential/light industrial developments. His special use permit work has included used car sales development and Town Center Special Use Permit applications.
